We Can’t Allow Nigeria to Win the AFCON – Ghanaians

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have secured a spot in the semi-finals of the 2023 African Cup of Nations in Cote D’Ivoire, triumphing over Angola with a 1-0 victory in the quarter-finals. This achievement positions the Eagles for a potential fourth AFCON title, but it has stirred reactions from Ghanaians who are determined to “prevent”  a Nigerian victory.

Ghanaians express concerns that a Nigerian AFCON win would lead to a year-long trolling spree on social media, with the potential for excessive noise pollution. Influential Ghanaian YouTuber, Kwadwo Sheldon, has even urged his compatriots not to allow Nigerians to claim the championship, suggesting that Ghanaians might need to take a break from social media if it happens.

Tensions between the two brothers have escalated further, with some Nigerians already engaging in preemptive trolling. One Twitter user stated, “If Nigeria wins the AFCON, we will buy Ghana and make it the 37th state.”

Ghana, facing disappointment with an early exit from the tournament at the group stages, is now rallying against a potential Nigerian triumph. The longstanding tradition of playful banter and trolling between Ghanaians and Nigerians on social media adds an extra layer of rivalry to this AFCON showdown.
