The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that a parliamentary by-election will be held in the Ayawaso East Constituency on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, following the death of the area’s Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure.
In a statement issued on Friday, January 16, 2026, the Commission said the parliamentary seat became vacant after the MP passed away on January 4 at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital following a short illness.
In line with Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution, as amended, the EC is required to organise a by-election to fill the vacancy.
The Commission has opened nominations for candidates who intend to contest the election. Nomination forms will be received at the Ayawaso East Municipal Office of the EC at North Ridge from Monday, February 9, to Wednesday, February 11, 2026.
Submissions will be accepted daily between 9:00 am and 12:00 pm, and from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
Prospective candidates are required to download nomination forms from the Electoral Commission’s website from January 16 to February 11, 2026. Completed forms may be submitted personally by candidates or on their behalf by either their proposer or seconder to the Returning Officer at the Ayawaso East Municipal Office.
Each nomination form must be endorsed by a proposer and a seconder, both of whom must be registered voters in the constituency, and supported by 18 additional registered voters.
The filing fee for the by-election has been set at GH¢10,000 per candidate. Female candidates and persons with disabilities will pay a reduced fee of GH¢7,500. All nomination forms must be submitted in quadruplicate.
The EC has urged political parties and prospective candidates to strictly comply with the guidelines and timelines to ensure a smooth and credible electoral process.
Mahama Naser Toure was a fourth-term Member of Parliament and served on several parliamentary committees, including the Energy Committee as Vice Chairman, as well as the Roads and Transport Committee, the House Committee, and the Private Members’ Bills and Motions Committee.
