Morocco advanced to the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after defeating Nigeria 4-2 on penalties following a goalless draw in a tense semi-final encounter at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat on Wednesday night.

Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou emerged as the hero for the hosts, saving two spot-kicks in the shootout, while Youssef En-Nesyri converted the decisive penalty to send Morocco through to their first AFCON final in over two decades.

The match ended 0-0 after 120 minutes, with few clear-cut chances created by either side. Morocco, however, appeared the more threatening team over the course of the game and were denied on several occasions by impressive saves from Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

Nigeria, who entered the semi-final as the tournament’s highest-scoring side, struggled to assert themselves offensively and produced a subdued attacking display. Their hopes faded in the shootout when penalties from Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi were saved by Bounou.

Morocco, who have been efficient and disciplined throughout the competition, came close to scoring during regulation time. Nayef Aguerd’s header from a corner struck the outside of the post, while Ismael Saibari and Ayoub El Kaabi both went close but were denied by Nwabali.

Nigeria’s talisman Victor Osimhen had a rare opportunity in the box, but a heavy touch allowed the chance to slip away as the Super Eagles failed to create sustained pressure.

The victory puts Morocco on the brink of their first continental title since 1976. They will face reigning champions Senegal in Sunday’s final in Rabat. Senegal secured their place in the final earlier on Wednesday with a 1-0 win over Egypt in Tangier, courtesy of a goal from Sadio Mane.

Nigeria will now face Egypt in the third-place playoff, scheduled for Saturday.
