The Ghanaian government will officially launch its 5G high-speed internet service today, November 1, 2024, at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra. President Akufo-Addo is set to announce the service, which promises to transform internet connectivity and significantly boost speed across the nation.

5G, the Fifth Generation of Wireless Technology, brings enhanced internet speeds, improved upload/download times, more consistent connections, and greater capacity. While operating on similar frequencies to 3G, 4G, and LTE, 5G surpasses these technologies in speed, latency, and bandwidth, with estimates placing its speed at up to ten times that of 4G Plus.

In preparation for this rollout, the government has partnered with seven key industry players to create shared infrastructure for 5G services, promoting affordability and accessibility of high-speed mobile broadband across Ghana. Leading this infrastructure development is Next Gen InfraCo NGIC, a government-co-promoted company working with partners such as Ascend Digital, K-NET, Radisys, Nokia, Tech Mahindra, AT Ghana, and Telecel Ghana.

The 5G service is expected to provide numerous benefits, including quicker access to digital services in healthcare, education, and finance. The service aims to empower citizens to engage more efficiently with digital resources, improving overall connectivity and digital integration across various sectors in Ghana.
