Foreign Affairs Minister-designate Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has announced plans to introduce a courier system to help clear a backlog of 70,000 uncollected passports across the country.

Speaking in an interview with TV3, Ablakwa stated that an immediate audit would be conducted to identify applicants and ensure that the unclaimed passports are delivered to their rightful owners.

To resolve the issue, Ablakwa emphasized that the government would implement a nationwide courier system, allowing applicants to receive their passports at their preferred locations.

“We will roll out a courier system so applicants can receive their passports wherever they are. There must be a clear identification process, and if addresses are available, we will contact them directly,” he explained.

Additionally, he highlighted the need for digital transformation and operational reforms at the passport office to enhance efficiency and reduce processing times.

Addressing concerns regarding Diplomatic Passports, Ablakwa stressed that their issuance must be strictly controlled, limiting access to government officials and foreign service personnel.

He revealed plans for a comprehensive review of the issuance process to prevent misuse and protect Ghana’s international reputation.

The proposed reforms are expected to bring greater convenience to passport applicants while improving the integrity and efficiency of Ghana’s passport administration system.
