Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, has disclosed that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has engaged top legal practitioners in the United States to challenge efforts to extradite him to Ghana.

Dr Ayine made this known during the government’s Accountability Series on Thursday, December 18, 2025, after Ghana submitted a formal extradition request to US authorities.

According to the Attorney General, it is standard practice for individuals facing extradition to contest the process through the courts.

“The person who is the subject of an extradition will fight it in court. I have been informed that Mr Ofori-Atta has hired some of the top lawyers in the US with extensive experience to defend him,” Dr Ayine stated.

He noted that the development does not intimidate Ghanaian authorities, stressing that the extradition process in the US follows established judicial procedures.

Dr Ayine explained that the case could pass through several levels of the US federal court system, including the district court, circuit court, and potentially the Supreme Court, depending on the outcome of each stage.

While acknowledging that the legal process may be lengthy, he expressed confidence in Ghana’s extradition request and emphasised that the final determination now lies with the US judicial authorities.
