The reopening of Senior High Schools (SHS) for fresh students in Ghana has sparked controversy, as the Ghana Education Service (GES) stands firm on the December 4, 2023 reopening date, despite raised concerns.
The GES reaffirmed its stance, instructing students to report to school on Monday, December 4, 2023, as indicated on their placement forms. Management emphasized the commencement of student registration and orientation from this date, aligning with the academic calendar. This schedule includes a Christmas break from December 21, 2023, to January 3, 2024, followed by continued academic activities until March 5, 2024.
However, this decision faced opposition from the Parliament, urging the Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, to reschedule the academic start to January 2024. Parliament cited the necessity for adequate preparation time for parents, students, and teachers, considering the abrupt notice.
The Parliamentary Service, expressing concerns over the short notice’s inconvenience, proposed the first week of January 2024 as a more suitable time for the commencement of academic work. Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin directed the Minister of Education to provide insights and address the concerns of Members of Parliament on Monday, December 4, 2023, at 12:30 pm.
The Ministry of Education, however, reiterated the adherence to the initially scheduled reopening date, in line with the 2023/2024 academic calendar released by the GES. The ministry urged remaining students to complete their self-placement promptly and appreciated stakeholders for their collaboration, aiming to implement the SHS academic calendar seamlessly.
The controversy surrounding the reopening date persists, with parliamentary discussions ongoing regarding the concerns raised by various stakeholders.
