Former Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, has been arrested in the United States following an extradition request by the Government of Ghana.

Officials at Ghana’s Embassy in Washington confirmed that Mrs. Tamakloe-Attionu is currently being held at the Nevada Southern Detention Center in Pahrump, Nevada. Her arrest was carried out by the United States Marshals on January 6, 2026, after U.S. authorities acted on an extradition request submitted by Ghana in July 2024.

In a statement dated January 15, 2026, Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Emmanuel Smith, disclosed that the former MASLOC boss is in custody awaiting a court appearance, during which issues relating to her extradition to Ghana will be considered.

Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu was convicted in absentia by an Accra High Court in April 2024 on 78 counts, including causing financial loss to the state, stealing, conspiracy to steal, money laundering, and breaches of the Public Procurement Act. The case involved the alleged misappropriation of funds earmarked for MASLOC operations.

The court sentenced her to 10 years’ imprisonment with hard labour after she failed to return to Ghana, having earlier travelled abroad on permission to seek medical treatment. Her co-accused, former MASLOC Operations Manager Daniel Axim, was also convicted and sentenced to five years’ imprisonment.

Following the conviction, the Government of Ghana initiated extradition proceedings to have Mrs. Tamakloe-Attionu returned to serve her sentence and face additional legal processes. U.S. authorities subsequently acted on the request, leading to her arrest.
