Senior Staff of Public Universities Set to Begin Nationwide Strike on September 16

The Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana has announced a nationwide strike commencing on Monday, September 16, 2024, in response to unresolved issues regarding their working conditions.

The association’s decision comes after the government failed to address their demands for improved service conditions, despite multiple protests and negotiations. Members across all public universities are expected to halt their services in protest.

In a statement signed by National Chairman George Ansong, the association criticized the government for failing to meet the September 16 deadline for implementing agreed-upon measures. Specifically, they cited the government’s failure to adjust vehicle maintenance and related allowances to the new rates and its delay in transferring Tier 2 pension deductions to fund managers, which has been outstanding since January 2024. Additionally, they called for a recalculation of pension interest from 2010 to 2016.

Earlier in January 2024, the Senior Staff Association, along with other university worker unions, had initiated a similar strike to demand these adjustments. However, they suspended their action after the government pledged to meet their conditions—a promise that remains unfulfilled.

Key administrative offices, libraries, campus security, and health services at public universities are expected to shut down during the strike. The association’s leadership has made it clear that they will not resume work until their grievances are fully addressed.

“All member campuses are instructed to strictly comply with this directive,” the statement concluded.
