Morocco completed a remarkable journey at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Chile on Sunday night, defeating Argentina 2-0 to claim their first-ever World Cup title at any age level.

Yassir Zabiri, who plays for FC Famalicao in Portugal’s top division, scored twice in the first half to give Morocco a commanding lead before the break, and that was enough to secure victory for the North African side.

Morocco’s path to the final was nothing short of impressive, having eliminated South Korea, the United States, and France in the knockout stages before overpowering Argentina in the final. The win makes Morocco the second African team to win the U-20 title after Ghana’s victory in 2009.

For Argentina, the defeat was their first of the tournament. The South American giants, who were chasing a record-extending seventh U-20 World Cup title, played the competition without two of their brightest young stars, Bayer Leverkusen’s Claudio Echeverri and Real Madrid’s Franco Mastantuono.

The victory adds to Morocco’s growing football reputation following their senior team’s semifinal appearance at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Their senior squad has already secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup in North America, while Argentina remains the reigning senior world champion.
