The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has defended the government’s decision to recruit 7,000 teachers, citing budget constraints despite growing demand across the country.
Speaking at the launch of the 19th eLearning Africa Conference on April 14, 2026, he acknowledged that the number falls short of what is needed but explained that financial limitations have made it impossible to recruit more.
He stated that ideally, the country would require up to 50,000 teachers, but the Ministry of Education secured clearance from the Ministry of Finance to recruit only 7,000 degree and diploma holders.
According to him, the recruitment process has been conducted in an open and transparent manner to ensure fairness for all applicants.
Beyond recruitment, the Minister also highlighted plans to introduce a digital education policy aimed at addressing gaps in the education system and improving learning outcomes nationwide.
