The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has urged Ghanaians to exercise patience and understanding as the country prepares for a 14.75% increase in electricity tariffs, set to take effect on May 3, 2025.
The tariff hike, announced by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), is part of efforts to stabilize the energy sector and address persistent operational and financial challenges.
Speaking during the Committee of Ministers meeting of the West African Gas Pipeline Project in Accra, Mr. Jinapor emphasized that the tariff adjustment is a necessary measure to sustain reliable electricity supply and support ongoing sector reforms.
“I want to appeal to Ghanaians and the general consuming public to bear with us even as we make some of these difficult, but unavoidable decisions to ensure that we have stable and reliable power sources for our own economic development,” he said.
The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing the efficiency of the power sector while ensuring long-term sustainability and access for all.
