The Drivers and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced major reforms to Ghana’s vehicle registration system, including the introduction of new number plates and advanced tracking technology.
Speaking on Face to Face on Channel One TV, DVLA Chief Executive Julius Neequaye Kotey explained that new Dealer’s Permit (DP) stickers will ensure accountability and traceability of vehicles entering the country. The stickers, when scanned, reveal details such as the vehicle’s owner, arrival date, destination, and sticker expiry date.
Mr. Kotey emphasized that while car dealers must use DP stickers when holding vehicles, private car owners are required to register their vehicles within two weeks of purchase. He warned that unauthorized use of DV plates, except for purposes like vehicle repairs, constitutes a violation.
He further revealed that the DVLA may introduce a special, high-cost number plate for individuals who fail to register their cars within the required period.
As part of the reforms, DVLA will also eliminate the practice of displaying the year of manufacture on number plates. Starting January 1, 2026, plates will feature a regional code at the top and an area code at the end, for example, GR 222 ADm, where AD represents Adenta.
Mr. Kotey noted that the legal framework for these reforms has been finalized, with implementation set for January 1.
