Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, a prominent flagbearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former Minister for Agriculture, has made the decision to suspend his upcoming campaign tour of the Ashanti Region. This move comes as a mark of respect for the recent passing of Theresa Kufuor, the esteemed former First Lady and wife of the revered former president, John Agyekum Kufuor.

During a press conference held at his residence in Kumasi, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto expressed his condolences to the Kufuor family and announced the postponement of his campaign tour in the Ashanti Region. He assured party delegates that a new date would be announced in due course, with hopes of resuming his campaign activities prior to the NPP’s internal election on November 4, 2023.

Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto utilized the occasion to urge NPP delegates to elect him as the party’s flagbearer, emphasizing his commitment to leading the NPP to victory in the upcoming 2024 general elections. He acknowledged the significance of the delegate’s decision and expressed gratitude for their ongoing support.

“We have decided to suspend our Ashanti regional campaign tour as a gesture of respect for the passing of the former First Lady, Theresa Kufuor. We will return at an appropriate time, and we will ensure all concerned are duly informed. Nevertheless, I would like to take this opportunity to convey my deepest respect to the NPP delegates who have been entrusted with the responsibility of making a decision for our party. The true competition lies on November 4, and I implore the delegates to cast their votes in my favor,” Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto stated.

Theresa Kufuor, aged 87, peacefully passed away at her residence in Peduase on Sunday, October 1, in the presence of her loving family. Her demise marks the end of an era for Ghana, as she leaves behind an indelible legacy of grace, compassion, and dedication to public service.
