One person has died and another is receiving treatment after two separate road crashes occurred at Potsin Junction in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region.
The first incident involved a worker at Segu Farms, identified as Kofi Eduful, who was knocked down by a Sprinter passenger bus with registration number GS 5446-22 around 7pm on Wednesday, December 10. Eyewitnesses said the deceased, believed to be in his 50s, was attempting to cross the road, which is currently under construction, when the speeding vehicle hit him. He was rushed to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba but was pronounced dead on arrival.
According to Ebo Anderson, a local road safety advocate and leader of the Potsin Emergency Response Team, the crash was caused by poor visibility. He explained that thick dust had engulfed the area because the contractor had failed to water the road during the ongoing construction works, making it difficult for the driver to see the pedestrian.
Police have arrested the driver involved in the incident, and the vehicle has been impounded at the Potsin Police Station.
In a separate development, the driver of a Mitsubishi Outlander with registration GW 8598-24 sustained serious injuries after crashing into a trench reportedly dug by the contractor working on the Kasoa-Winneba Road expansion project. The incident also occurred at Potsin Junction.
Eyewitnesses suggested that the driver may have lost control due to the deteriorated road surface and the same poor visibility that contributed to the earlier fatal crash. The driver was quickly rescued and taken to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.
