The ECOWAS Council of Ministers has unanimously endorsed President John Dramani Mahama as the region’s sole candidate for the Chairpersonship of the African Union (AU) when the rotational leadership reaches West Africa in 2027. The endorsement was made during the Council’s ninety-fifth ordinary session held in Abuja, marking a significant boost to Ghana’s diplomatic profile.
The recommendation will now be forwarded to the Authority of Heads of State and Government for formal adoption on Sunday, December 14, 2025. If approved, it will cement Mahama as West Africa’s official nominee for the top continental position.
In a statement issued on Friday, December 12, 2025, ECOWAS expressed its appreciation to member states for rallying behind Ghana’s candidacy. The statement highlighted Ghana’s longstanding contributions to regional stability, peacekeeping, and continental development initiatives.
The Council reaffirmed its commitment to supporting candidates from ECOWAS member states in international and continental bodies. It emphasized that adopting a unified regional position is crucial to protecting and promoting West Africa’s collective interests at the African Union.
The statement underscored ECOWAS’ intention to work together to secure successful outcomes for the region’s candidates, noting its desire “to adopt a common position for effective support and voting in favour of the election of the Republic of Ghana to the Chairmanship of the African Union in 2027.”
The Council further noted that the endorsement is aligned with ECOWAS’ broader strategy of strengthening the region’s presence and influence in continental and global institutions. By unanimously selecting Mahama, the organisation believes West Africa will be well represented in advancing issues of governance, peace, integration, and economic cooperation.
The recommendation now awaits adoption by the Authority of Heads of State and Government, which is expected to approve the declaration and pave the way for Ghana to represent West Africa in the 2027 AU Chairmanship elections.
