The Accra High Court has ruled that the funeral of highlife icon Charles Kwadwo Fosu, widely known as Daddy Lumba, be postponed while it resolves the ongoing dispute over who has the authority to organise his final rites. The ruling follows an application filed by members of the musician’s maternal family seeking to stop the release of his remains.
The plaintiffs argue that according to Akan customs, the right to organise a person’s funeral lies solely with the maternal lineage. They insist that no other group has the mandate to take custody of Daddy Lumba’s body or manage any related funeral arrangements. This position has led to a clash with other relatives who also claim authority in planning the ceremony.
After reviewing submissions from both sides, the presiding judge deferred the final ruling to Friday. The forthcoming decision is expected to determine which family legally holds the responsibility to conduct the funeral, take custody of the remains, and oversee any memorial fund in the late musician’s name.
Speaking to journalists, Kweku Emmanuel Debrah, representative of the Family Head and first defendant, said the family welcomes the court’s ruling and remains committed to unity throughout the process.
Providing further updates on Okay FM, entertainment correspondent Philipa reported on the Best Entertainment Show that the court has effectively cancelled the previously announced date for Daddy Lumba’s funeral, pending its final decision on Friday.
