U.S. federal authorities have indicted Ghanaian national Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, for allegedly orchestrating an elaborate romance scam that defrauded elderly Americans of more than $8 million.

Kumi, also identified as Emmanuel Kojo Baah Obeng, was arrested in Ghana on December 11, 2025 following a multi-agency investigation involving both U.S. and Ghanaian authorities.

According to the indictment, the 31-year-old was part of a criminal network that used AI-generated identities to create fake online profiles, build emotionally intimate relationships with vulnerable victims, mostly elderly individuals and manipulate them into sending money and valuables. The scheme reportedly operated across social media and online dating platforms since 2023.

U.S. prosecutors say victims were convinced to offer financial assistance under the guise of medical emergencies, travel needs, or investment opportunities. Once funds were sent, they were allegedly routed through associates in the U.S. and transferred to Ghana and other destinations.

Kumi faces charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, money laundering conspiracy, and a forfeiture specification. The offences carry a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison.

The FBI Cleveland Division led the investigation, with significant support from Ghana’s Attorney General’s Office, EOCO, the Ghana Police Service, the Cyber Security Authority, NACOC, the National Intelligence Bureau, and multiple U.S. agencies.

Prosecutors emphasized that the indictment is only an allegation and Kumi remains presumed innocent until proven guilty.
