Two individuals were killed in separate incidents on Monday, December 16, as violence continues to escalate in Bawku. The killings occurred amidst ongoing tensions that have plagued the area since the resurgence of conflict in late October 2024.

The first victim, Moro Aziz, a mentally unstable resident of Gozesi, was reportedly killed near the Bawku cemetery after wandering into the area. Details surrounding his death remain unclear.

The second victim, Kasim, was targeted and killed in Daduri, another suburb of Bawku, while attempting to move to a different location. Eyewitnesses indicate that unidentified gunmen carried out the attack.

These fatalities bring the death toll to 35 since the conflict reignited in October, despite the imposition of a dawn-to-dusk curfew aimed at curbing violence.

The current tensions trace back to a longstanding chieftaincy dispute that first erupted in November 2021. A temporary lull in violence was observed in 2023, but hostilities resumed on October 25, 2024, following the return of Alhaji Seidu Abagre, a rival chief installed by the Nayir.

Security forces remain on high alert in Bawku, but efforts to restore peace have so far been unsuccessful, leaving the area in a state of uncertainty.
