In a thrilling competition, Presec (Presbyterian Boys Secondary School) has emerged as the winners of the 2023 edition of the National Science and Math Quiz (NSMQ). This victory marks their eighth overall trophy, solidifying their reputation as a dominant force in the prestigious academic competition.
Presec’s previous triumphs came in 1995, 2003, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2020, 2022, and now 2023. Notably, they have achieved back-to-back victories for the second time, having previously accomplished this feat in 2008 and 2009, followed by 2022 and 2023. They stand as the only school to have achieved such a remarkable streak.
The grand finale of the 2023 NSMQ edition witnessed an intense battle among Presec, Achimota School, and Opoku Ware School, with each school displaying their intellectual prowess.
The competition kicked off with a slow start in the first round, but the tension escalated as the rounds progressed.
At the end of Round 1, Presec, Legon led with 18 points, closely followed by Achimota School and Opoku Ware School, both with 12 points.
In Round 2, Presec, Legon maintained their lead with 23 points, while Opoku Ware School trailed behind with 14 points and Achimota School with 12 points.
The highly anticipated Problem of the Day in Round 3 tested the contestants’ knowledge and critical thinking skills. Presec, Legon secured 4 out of 10 points, while Achimota School and Opoku Ware School scored 3 and 2 points respectively.
As Round 4 concluded, Presec, Legon solidified their lead with 31 points, with Achimota School trailing at 28 points and Opoku Ware School at 20 points.
Ultimately, at the end of the contest, Presec, Legon emerged victorious with a final score of 40 points, showcasing their exceptional academic aptitude. Achimota School secured second place with 28 points, while Opoku Ware School took third place with 23 points.
