The University of Ghana has achieved a historic milestone by winning the 2025 Pan-African Universities Debate Championship (PAUDC) held in Johannesburg, South Africa. The victory marks the University’s first continental championship after previous attempts in 2019, 2021, and 2022.
The UG team delivered an exceptional performance throughout the competition, excelling in nine preliminary rounds and advancing confidently through three knockout stages to secure the 2025 title. Their consistency, strategy, and technical delivery earned them widespread recognition among participating universities from across Africa.
Ghana’s representation at the championship extended beyond the overall win. Four debaters from the University of Ghana ranked among the top ten speakers on the continent. Joel Aboagye emerged as the best overall speaker, placing 1st. He was followed by Jedidiah Henaku Budu in 4th place, Ann Aseye Donya in 5th place, and Andrew Kwasi Kattah, who secured the 10th position.
Team coach, Elisha Owusu Akyaw, who led the 13-member delegation to Johannesburg, expressed deep pride in the achievement. He described the victory as a historic moment for the debate society and a major turning point in their competitive journey. He added that the accomplishment represents not only the fulfilment of a long-standing goal but also the beginning of greater progress and future records.
The win serves as a defining moment for the University of Ghana Debate Society, reflecting years of rigorous preparation, institutional investment, strategic coaching, and the emergence of a dedicated new generation of debaters. It also strengthens Ghana’s position in the Pan-African debate community and highlights the University’s commitment to academic excellence and intellectual competition.
As the team returns to Accra, their historic triumph is celebrated as both a breakthrough moment and a signal of more continental success to come.
