UCC Tops Ghana for Health and Well-being in 2024 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings

The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has secured the top spot in Ghana for its efforts in promoting good health and well-being, aligned with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3, according to the 2024 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings announced on Wednesday, June 12, 2024.

The THE Impact Rankings are the only global performance metrics that evaluate universities based on their contributions to the United Nations’ SDGs. Utilizing meticulously calibrated indicators, THE offers an extensive comparison of universities’ impacts in four critical areas: research, stewardship, outreach, and teaching.

In its sixth edition, the 2024 Impact Rankings featured 2,125 universities from 125 countries/regions.

UCC’s exceptional performance earned it the highest national ranking with a score of 75.8 for its contributions to global health and well-being.

The SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being category of the THE Impact Rankings evaluates universities’ roles in promoting universal health coverage, reducing preventable deaths, and enhancing public health through innovative research, comprehensive health services, and community outreach programs.

Additionally, UCC ranked second in Ghana for providing quality education (SDG 4).

The SDG 4 – Quality Education category assesses universities’ dedication to promoting the right to education and ensuring access at all levels, from early childhood to secondary education and beyond.

By focusing on sustainable education practices, they equip students with relevant skills and foster effective learning outcomes essential for the future workforce.

This year, 1,681 universities from 122 countries/regions participated in this category.

A notable achievement in the 2024 THE Impact Rankings is UCC being the only university in Ghana ranked for SDG 14, Life Below Water.

This reflects the University’s commitment to sustainable marine resource management, protecting coastal ecosystems, and combating marine pollution through targeted research, educational initiatives, and direct action to preserve marine biodiversity.
