The Central East Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service has arrested three individuals in connection with the theft of a 2021 Hyundai Elantra valued at GH¢210,000, following weeks of detailed investigations.

The suspects, identified as Douglas Kwame Akunnor, a steel bender; Emmanuel Aduah, a trader; and Richard Baidoo, an entrepreneur, are accused of fraudulently acquiring the vehicle from a businessman in Kakraba in the Gomoa East District on November 24, 2025.

According to police, the suspects approached the businessman under the pretext of purchasing the Hyundai Elantra, which was registered with trade plate DV 6060-W. On the same day, Akunnor and Aduah presented a signed cash cheque worth GH¢210,000 on behalf of Albert Akwasi Ofori, a fourth suspect who is currently on the run and believed to be the mastermind behind the operation.

After the businessman deposited the cheque, the transaction was immediately reversed. Efforts to contact Ofori were unsuccessful, as he later confirmed the reversal and switched off his phone. The incident prompted the victim to lodge a formal complaint with the police.

An investigative team led by D/Inspector Emmanuel Owusu Danquah, with support from other officers, launched extensive investigations that led to the arrest of Emmanuel Aduah on January 2, 2026, while he was attempting to unlock his SIM card in the Western Region.

Further interrogation resulted in the arrest of Douglas Kwame Akunnor, who reportedly admitted his role in the theft and demonstrated how the crime was carried out. However, the suspects initially refused to disclose the whereabouts of the stolen vehicle.

Subsequent intelligence operations led police to Nsakina, where the Hyundai Elantra was recovered. The vehicle had been repainted from red to black and fitted with a fake registration number, GX 3856-21. At the time of recovery, the car was in the possession of Richard Baidoo, who was immediately arrested.

The three suspects were arraigned before the Kasoa Ofankor Circuit Court on January 6, 2026, and remanded into custody. They are expected to reappear in court on January 28, 2026, as investigations continue.

Police say efforts are ongoing to locate and arrest Albert Akwasi Ofori to face prosecution.
