The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has conducted a major operation at several illegal mining sites in Obuasi after intelligence revealed a resurgence of galamsey activities in the Amansie Central District.

The swoop, carried out on Monday, November 17, 2025, began at a concession in Anyankyireml belonging to Asanti Gold Corporation. The site had allegedly been occupied for months by illegal miners who blocked the company from accessing its own concession.

Task force officers moved in to reclaim the area, driving out the miners and securing the land for the rightful owners. The operation then extended to areas around the Obuasi Airport, where more illegal mining activities had been detected.

During the exercise, officers seized motorbikes, vehicles, water pumps, and other tools used for the illegal mining. Makeshift structures and equipment at the sites were also destroyed. While most miners fled upon noticing the task force, one suspected coordinator of the illegal operations was arrested and is assisting police with investigations. He is expected to face prosecution.

Officials say the operation forms part of intensified efforts to disrupt galamsey networks and return concessions to their legitimate holders.
