Recent statistics from the Ghana Health Service (GHS) indicate that the number of females living with HIV and AIDS in the Bono Region significantly surpasses that of males.
As of September 2024, out of the 11,401 Persons Living with HIV and AIDS (PLwHAs) in the region, 8,481 were females, while 2,727 were males. Despite these figures, all affected individuals are reportedly receiving treatment.
The Bono Regional HIV Coordinator, Mr. Emmanuel Obeng-Hinneh, shared these details at a stakeholder meeting in Sunyani. The meeting, organized by the Bono Regional Technical Support Unit of the Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC) in collaboration with the Bono Regional Coordinating Council, aimed to identify gaps in the regional HIV response and strategize on improving prevention, treatment, and care.
Mr. Obeng-Hinneh also provided updates on HIV Viral Load (VL) testing, revealing that out of 9,791 eligible clients, 8,177 samples had been taken, with 6,270 tests conducted. The testing coverage stood at 64%, with an 88% viral suppression rate.
Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim Bambilla, the Technical Coordinator for the Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo Regions of the GAC, urged stakeholders to continue supporting the Commission in addressing the HIV situation in the region. He reaffirmed GAC’s commitment to partnering with NGOs to implement preventive measures and reduce the spread of the disease.
