Komenda Sugar Factory to Be Revived – President Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has assured that the Komenda Sugar Factory in the Central Region will become fully operational under his administration.

Speaking at a “Thank You” rally in Cape Coast, he emphasized his government’s commitment to ensuring the factory operates as planned, positioning the Central Region as Ghana’s leading sugar producer. He has directed the Minister of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry to provide an update on the factory’s status to facilitate necessary actions.

The factory was originally established under the NDC government with a $35 million loan from the Indian Export-Import Bank, followed by an additional $24 million investment. It was inaugurated by Mahama in May 2016 but ceased operations shortly after.

Despite attempts by the NPP government to revive the factory, full operations were hindered by challenges, particularly inadequate raw material supply. In August 2024, former Trade Minister K.T. Hammond announced plans to lease the facility to West African Agro Limited, an India-based firm, for a renewable 15 to 20-year term.

Outgrower farmers have expressed dissatisfaction with the factory’s management, citing a lack of transparency. President Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to supporting farmers with improved irrigation and modernized agricultural policies.

Mahama also pledged to complete the long-delayed Anomabo Fisheries College, stating that budgetary allocations would be made in March to ensure its inauguration before the end of the year.

He highlighted the Central Region’s historical significance and its potential in agribusiness, vowing to invest in its development. He expressed gratitude to the people for their support and assured them of his commitment to fulfilling campaign promises, ensuring the region receives its fair share of national development.
