Joseph Paul Amoah Clinches Gold in 200m Final at African Games 2023, Ghana’s First Victory Since 1973

Ghanaian sprinter Joseph Paul Amoah has secured a historic gold medal in the men’s 200m event at the ongoing African Games. Amoah’s remarkable feat marks Ghana’s first gold in the event since Ohene Karikari’s triumph in 1973.

Amoah crossed the finish line with a stellar time of 20.70 seconds, outpacing his competitors and etching his name in Ghanaian sports history. His victory was a testament to his skill and determination, as he faced tough competition from Emmanuel Claude Itounue Bongogne of Cameroon, who finished with a time of 20.74 seconds, and Consider Ekanem of Nigeria, who clocked in at 20.80 seconds.

The gold medal also marks the first track and field gold for Ghana in the ongoing games, following the team’s silver and bronze victories in the 4x100m relay finals for men and women, respectively. Fuseini Ibrahim, another Ghanaian finalist in the 200m event, narrowly missed the podium, finishing in fourth place.
