The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has announced a significant reduction in the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) proposed budget for the Black Stars’ upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Mali, cutting it from $2 million to $1.3 million.
Sports Minister and Buem MP, Kofi Adams, disclosed the revision during a press briefing on Tuesday, noting that his administration carefully reviews budget submissions and eliminates inflated or unnecessary costs before granting approval.
“The estimate submitted for Match Day 7 (Chad game only) was over $1 million,” Adams explained. “After review, the Ministry approved about $860,000. For players and officials, we use a flat unit for tickets, set at $6,000 per person, but the amounts presented are often higher. Since I took office, we have reviewed these costs and even used alternative means to secure cheaper tickets.”
The decision follows months of public scrutiny of the Black Stars’ spending, with President John Mahama earlier directing that all budgets for national team assignments be disclosed to promote transparency.
Adams emphasized that the cuts were in line with this directive, assuring that the ministry remains committed to accountability in managing national team expenditure.
Meanwhile, Otto Addo’s squad has departed for N’Djamena ahead of their September 4 clash with Chad at the Stade Olympique Maréchal Idriss Déby Itno. The team will then return to Accra to host Mali at the Accra Sports Stadium on September 8 in their Match Day 8 fixture
