The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has directed the University of Ghana (UG) to strictly adhere to the fees approved by the Ministry of Education for the 2025/2026 academic year, warning that failure to comply will attract sanctions.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, GTEC stated that the approved fees, earlier communicated to the university, remain valid and in force despite concerns raised by the university’s management.
The University of Ghana, through its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, on January 13, raised objections to some components of the approved fees, including the GH₵100 75th Anniversary Levy.
GTEC clarified that decisions reached during previous engagements with the university were merely recommendations and subject to the final approval of the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu. According to the Commission, the Minister’s approval was based on prevailing economic conditions and a careful review of the fee adjustments proposed by the university.
The Commission disclosed that the Minister intervened to moderate the proposed increases after identifying concerns such as the compulsory nature of the 75th Anniversary Levy, the linking of certain levies to students’ registration for academic activities, and the continued charging of the levy despite the university marking its 78th anniversary.
GTEC also expressed concern about disparities in the Telecel Broadband Levy, noting that fresh students were expected to pay GH₵322, while continuing students were charged GH₵122. The Commission described the discrepancy as unfair and inconsistent with the approved fee structure.
“In light of the foregoing, the Commission’s communiqué dated January 12, 2026, prescribing the fees approved by the Honourable Minister of Education remains valid and in force,” the statement said.
GTEC has therefore directed the University of Ghana to submit evidence of compliance by January 22, 2026. It warned that failure to do so would result in the withdrawal of all GTEC services to the university, except for the processing of salary subventions.
On Monday, January 12, 2026, GTEC announced the approved fees for the University of Ghana, stating that the move was intended to promote transparency and address public concerns over rising university charges.
The statement, signed by Director-General Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, indicated that the Academic Facility User Fee would remain unchanged from the 2024/2025 academic year.
Other approved fees include Student Representative Council dues of GH₵50, SRC Development Levy of GH₵150, Graduate Students Association Development Levy of GH₵250, and a Telecel Broadband Levy of GH₵122 applicable to all undergraduate students, including freshmen.
