A suspect linked to the fatal shooting of a wildlife officer at the Kalakpa Forest Reserve in the Ho West District has been found dead while in police custody at Abutia Kloe, where he was being held pending investigations.
The Assembly Member for the Abutia Kloe Electoral Area, Fredrick Tengey, confirmed the development, stating that the suspect was discovered dead in the police cell. Preliminary indications suggest the death may have resulted from self-inflicted harm.
Police authorities have not yet issued an official statement on the circumstances surrounding the incident. However, the family of the deceased wildlife officer has been formally informed of the suspect’s death.
The development follows the killing of a 28-year-old wildlife officer, identified as Mr Raphael Ganyo, who was shot in the early hours of Tuesday, January 6, 2026, while on patrol near the Zitoe Camp within the Kalakpa Forest Reserve.
According to the Forestry Commission, the officer was part of a patrol team responding to suspected poaching activities when they encountered an armed individual close to the boundary of the reserve.
Speaking on the matter, Mr Tengey said he received a call from the family of the late officer indicating that the suspect had allegedly hanged himself in the police cell. He noted that while the family had seen the body, official confirmation from the district police command was still pending.
Investigations into both the killing of the wildlife officer and the death of the suspect are expected to continue.
