The Old Girls’ Association (OGA) of Wesley Girls’ High School has strongly dismissed recent allegations of religious discrimination at the school, describing the claims as misleading and contrary to the institution’s long-standing values. The Association issued a press release on Thursday, December 11, 2025, in response to public discussions surrounding reports of alleged intolerance at the prestigious Cape Coast-based girls’ school.

According to the OGA, Wesley Girls’ High School has, throughout its history, welcomed students from various religious backgrounds, including multiple Christian denominations as well as students of other faiths. The Association emphasised that all students have thrived under a well-structured environment rooted in Methodist principles, which have guided the school for generations. It therefore rejected any attempt to portray the school as discriminatory or intolerant.

The statement stressed that Wesley Girls’ High School stands in loco parentis to the thousands of students under its care, and as such, the school has established objective standard guidelines designed to ensure discipline, safety, and academic excellence. These guidelines, the OGA explained, align with the 2024 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) governing faith-based government-assisted schools.

The Association noted that not all individual preferences can be accommodated if doing so risks undermining the school’s high performance standards, health protocols, or uniformity in its academic and administrative systems. It added that the school’s rules apply equally to all students, without discrimination.

The OGA acknowledged that Wesley Girls is home to students from varied religious backgrounds but argued that providing accommodations for some faiths over others would undermine impartiality. It noted that such personalised concessions are neither practical nor sustainable and could erode the school’s strong institutional traditions and discipline.

The Association also highlighted the enduring partnership between the Methodist Church Ghana and the Government of Ghana, describing it as foundational to the school’s reputation for discipline, high achievement, and strong values.

While affirming its respect for the constitutional right to religious freedom, the OGA underscored that such freedom must be exercised alongside respect for institutional guidelines, especially in faith-based schools where the ethos is clearly defined. It expressed full support for the Methodist Church Ghana and endorsed the school’s established principles as non-negotiable pillars of its identity.

Representing generations of past students—many of whom now have their own children enrolled in the school—the OGA called for restraint, respect, and a focus on the welfare of all students as public discussions continue. It reiterated its confidence in the Headmistress, the School Board, and the Methodist Church Ghana to safeguard the cherished values that have shaped Wesley Girls’ High School for over a century.

The statement reaffirmed that the school remains a home for all students who choose to be part of its community and assured the public that the OGA will continue to support efforts to preserve its legacy of excellence.

The press release was signed by Harriet Wereko-Brobby, President of the Wesley Girls’ High School Old Girls’ Association, and dated December 11, 2025.
