Ghana Misses U20 World Cup Spot After Defeat to Egypt on Penalties

Ghana’s U20 national team, the Black Satellites, have failed to qualify for the U20 World Cup after a heartbreaking 5-4 penalty shootout loss to Egypt in the quarterfinals of the U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on May 12, 2025.

The match, played in Egypt, ended 2-2 after regulation time. Despite fighting back from a two-goal deficit with goals from Aziz Issah and Hakim Sulemana, Ghana could not secure the win in extra time.

Egypt opened the scoring through Momen Sherif in the 19th minute, before he added another just eight minutes later. Ghana responded with a long-range effort from Issah and a penalty conversion by Sulemana.

The game went to penalties, where Egypt edged Ghana 5-4 to advance to the semi-finals and book their place at the U20 World Cup. Ghana, however, exits the tournament and misses out on World Cup qualification.
