Media Needs Support in Fight Against Galamsey – Ing. Dr. Kenneth Ashigbe

Ing. Dr. Kenneth Ashigbe, the Lead Convener for the Media Coalition Against Galamsey, has emphasized that the media cannot combat illegal mining, or galamsey, in Ghana alone.

This statement comes in response to concerns raised by Sir Sam Jonah, Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, about a significant decline in media coverage of galamsey activities.

During the launch of the 75th-Anniversary celebrations of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) in Accra on April 17, 2024, Sir Sam Jonah expressed doubt about the effectiveness of media coverage, citing what he described as the “largely unserious way” the media has addressed the issue of galamsey.

He highlighted the severe impact of galamsey on the livelihoods of millions affected by the illegal mining operations.

In a discussion on the issue on Morning Starr with Francis Abban, Dr. Ashigbe agreed with Sir Sam Jonah’s assessment of the situation. However, he disagreed with placing the blame solely on the media.

Dr. Ashigbe stressed the need for a collective effort to combat galamsey, involving not only the media but also the general public and stakeholders like Sir Sam Jonah.

“We need the support of the general public and people and stakeholders like him to support that particular fight,” Dr. Ashigbe stated.

He emphasized the importance of influential figures like Sir Sam Jonah lending their voices to support the media’s efforts in raising awareness about galamsey and garnering the necessary support to tackle the issue effectively.
