Three Remanded for Attacking Firefighters at Kumasi’s Racecourse Market

Three individuals have been remanded by the Kwadaso Circuit Court for allegedly assaulting firefighters during a fire incident at Kumasi’s Racecourse Market. The accused, identified as Solomon Anaba (18), Akongoli Adoko (18), and Lamamia Ishmael (21), all laborers, faced charges of conspiring to assault a public officer and assaulting a public officer. Their pleas were not accepted during the court proceedings.

ASP Jonas Newlove Adjei, the prosecutor, requested the court to keep the accused in police custody for further investigations, arguing that as squatters, they might interfere with the ongoing inquiries if granted bail. Presided over by His Honour Stephen Kumi, the court granted the prosecutor’s request and remanded the accused persons until March 26, 2024.

The arrests took place on March 11, 2024, after the accused allegedly threw stones at firefighters from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital fire station, who were attempting to control a severe fire at the market. One firefighter was injured by a stone during the attack but has since received treatment and been discharged.
