Police have arrested the NPP Sunyani East Constituency Communications Officer, Abubakar Yakubu, popularly known as Baba Amando.
He was arrested on Sunday, April 12, 2026, when he reported to the Bono Regional Police Headquarters with his lawyer, former Deputy Attorney-General Alfred Tuah Yeboah, following an invitation.
However, upon arrival, police officers reportedly informed them that there was no record of such an invitation.
According to the NPP, further engagement with the Police CID Headquarters in Accra later revealed that Mr. Yakubu was required in the capital. The CID subsequently directed the Bono Regional Police to arrest him and transfer him to Accra, where he is currently being conveyed.
Reacting to the development, NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye described the arrest as troubling and questioned its implications for Ghana’s democratic system.
The party expressed concerns about the use of state security agencies, suggesting the move could be aimed at intimidating dissenting voices.
It also raised broader concerns about threats to free speech and civil liberties, urging authorities to follow due process and uphold the rule of law.
The NPP further called on citizens to remain vigilant while stressing the need to protect fundamental rights.
