The opening stages of the match were characterized by a scrappy affair, with neither team able to establish a rhythm. However, Nigeria gradually increased their work rate and were rewarded with a penalty in the 34th minute. Cyriel Dessers made no mistake from the spot, calmly slotting the ball past goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi to give Nigeria a 1-0 lead at halftime.
