National Security operatives have arrested 16 commercial drivers and impounded their vehicles for charging illegal fares in Kumasi, Ashanti Region.
The arrests were made on Monday, January 26, 2026, during a joint operation conducted in the Sofoline and Santasi areas. The exercise also focused on traffic control at major intersections to reduce congestion and improve the smooth flow of vehicles. The impounded vehicles have been handed over to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) for further action.
Passengers welcomed the operation and appealed to authorities to sustain it.
Speaking to the media, Deputy Ashanti Regional National Security Officer in charge of operations, Ivan Bilson, said the exercise was motivated by persistent traffic congestion and complaints about unapproved fares charged by some commercial drivers.
He explained that the affected road serves as a major transport corridor linking Kumasi to Cape Coast, Takoradi, Elubo and other destinations, making congestion a regular challenge for commuters, especially during peak hours.
Mr Bilson said the second focus of the operation followed confirmed reports that some drivers, particularly commercial and truck drivers, were charging exorbitant and unapproved fares. In some instances, passengers were charged full fares despite being dropped off after very short distances.
According to him, such practices violate fare structures approved by transport unions. This led to consultations with the Metropolitan Assembly and the arrest of offending drivers.
He added that commuters expressed satisfaction with the operation and called for its continuous enforcement to prevent a return to illegal practices.
