The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has revoked 278 small-scale mining licenses across Ghana due to violations of mining regulations and expired operational permits.

The Ministry’s Spokesperson and Media Relations Officer, Paa Kwesi Schandorf, announced the decision in a Facebook post on Thursday, October 23, describing it as part of the government’s renewed efforts to bring order and accountability to the mining sector.

According to Mr. Schandorf, the revocation affected operators who failed to meet environmental and safety requirements or continued mining beyond their license validity period. He emphasized that the Ministry remains committed to enforcing regulations to ensure responsible mining practices.

This move aligns with the stance of the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, to instill discipline and transparency within the small-scale mining industry. The decision comes amid growing concerns about illegal mining activities, known locally as galamsey, which have caused severe environmental degradation and water pollution in several parts of the country.

The latest action signals the government’s firm resolve to reform the small-scale mining sector as part of a broader strategy to promote sustainable and environmentally friendly mining operations nationwide.
