Ghanaian Man Who Stabbed Mother to Death in Manchester Detained Under Mental Health Act

A 22-year-old man has been detained under the Mental Health Act following a tragic triple stabbing incident in Manchester that claimed the life of a 43-year-old Ghanaian woman, Alberta Obinim. The attack occurred on Sunday night at a house on Barnard Road in the Gorton area.

Alberta Obinim was fatally stabbed at around 23:20 BST. Two other victims—a 64-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl—suffered life-threatening injuries during the attack. While the man remains in critical condition, the teenage girl’s condition has stabilized, according to the Greater Manchester Police.

The police confirmed that all individuals involved in the incident were known to each other. Following the arrest, the suspect was placed under the care of mental health professionals.

In response to the tragedy, Detective Chief Inspector Charlotte Whalley of the Major Incident Team expressed her condolences to those affected. She emphasized the ongoing investigation, noting that extra patrols have been deployed in the area to reassure the community.

“We continue to appeal for any information,” DCI Whalley stated, urging anyone who witnessed the incident or was near Barnard Road around 11 pm on the night of the attack to come forward. She encouraged individuals with dash cam, doorbell, or mobile phone footage to share it with the police to aid in the investigation.
