The Ghana Police Service has confirmed the rescue of a 15-year-old Nigerian girl who was trafficked from Nigeria to Ghana for sexual exploitation.
In a statement issued by the Western Central Regional Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) in Tarkwa, police reported that 25-year-old Joy Ogbonna was arrested at Aboso near Tarkwa on Monday, November 3, 2025, following a complaint by the victim’s father, Ogbonno Onuigbo.
The victim had gone missing in Nigeria in October 2025 but later contacted her father on October 24, revealing that she had been trafficked and abused in Ghana.
Investigations showed that a woman identified as Golden Blessing, currently on the run, lured the victim from Enugu to Lagos under the pretext of offering her a cleaning job. She then handed the girl over to Joy Ogbonna, who transported her to Tarkwa and confined her in a room, forcing her into sex work while taking the proceeds.
With the help of a passerby, the victim managed to reach her father, which led to her rescue. A medical report later confirmed that the girl was five weeks pregnant.
The suspect, Joy Ogbonna, is in police custody and will be arraigned before the court soon. Meanwhile, efforts are ongoing to arrest her accomplice, Golden Blessing, who is believed to be hiding in Nigeria.
The Ghana Police Service, through the Western Central Regional Command, commended the public for their timely assistance and reaffirmed its commitment to fighting human trafficking and protecting vulnerable individuals from all forms of abuse and exploitation.
