The Government of Ghana has declared every Wednesday as National Fugu Day, encouraging Ghanaians and friends of the country at home and abroad to wear Fugu, also known as Batakari, in its various designs and styles.
The announcement was made by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts in a statement signed by the sector minister, Ablah Dzifa Gomashie, on February 10, 2026. The initiative forms part of efforts to preserve, promote, and celebrate Ghana’s rich cultural heritage while projecting the country’s identity with pride on the global stage.
According to the Ministry, dedicating Wednesdays to wearing Fugu will highlight the cultural significance of the traditional attire and encourage its use as a symbol of national pride and self-expression. The attire may be worn in its diverse forms and complemented with its distinctive accessories.
The government believes the initiative will generate significant social and economic benefits. These include empowering local weavers, designers, artisans, and traders along the Fugu value chain, while expanding business opportunities, job creation, and commercial activities across the country.
The Ministry further noted that the collective embrace of Fugu is expected to strengthen national unity, stimulate the creative economy, and reinforce Ghana’s cultural confidence both locally and internationally.
