Parliament has approved a total of GH¢9.2 billion for the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) for the 2026 financial year to support healthcare delivery across the country.

The approval was granted on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, and the allocation will be used to finance healthcare services for members of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). The fund will also cover approved administrative and operational expenses required for the effective management of the scheme.

The NHIF serves as the main financing mechanism for the NHIS and is managed by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA). Its primary role is to ensure that citizens and residents in Ghana have access to affordable and quality healthcare services.

The fund supports a wide range of healthcare needs, including consultations, treatments, medications, and medical procedures approved under the NHIS benefits package. It also provides financial backing for the administrative functions of the scheme, such as staff remuneration, operational costs, and health information systems.

Funding for the NHIF comes from multiple sources, including annual government allocations approved by Parliament, premiums and registration fees paid by NHIS subscribers, the National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL), and support from development partners.

Through the NHIF, healthcare providers are reimbursed for services rendered to insured members, helping to reduce out-of-pocket healthcare costs and improve financial protection for Ghanaians. The fund also supports efforts to expand healthcare access, particularly in rural and underserved communities.
