Former Black Stars Captain Asamoah Gyan Clears the Air Regarding Kevin-Muntari 2014 World Cup Incident

In response to recent claims that he failed to defend Kevin-Prince Boateng and Sulley Muntari when they were dismissed from the Ghanaian national team during the 2014 World Cup, former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has provided his side of the story, shedding light on the events that unfolded during that time.

Kevin Prince Boateng recently stated in an interview that he and Muntari were sacked from the team due to their demand for the timely payment of bonuses. Gyan has now addressed these accusations, explaining the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Gyan clarified that Kevin’s case unfolded at the training grounds in front of the entire team, where he had a heated exchange with the coach, Kwesi Appiah. According to Gyan, the coach had been repeatedly disrespected by Kevin, and the incident in question was the breaking point. Gyan emphasized that they had defended Kevin behind the scenes on numerous occasions, but the coach reached a tipping point and decided to take action.

Gyan further supported his stance by providing an analogy involving Manchester United, stating, “Tell the whole Man U team to boycott training because the coach had a problem with Sancho. Let’s be real here.” He implied that even in top-tier clubs, such incidents are handled by the coach’s decision, and it is not solely the responsibility of the captain to intervene.

It is evident from Gyan’s explanation that Kevin’s dismissal was not solely his call as the team captain but was primarily made by the coach, who had reached his limit due to repeated instances of disrespect. Gyan emphasized that this incident marked the first time he witnessed Coach Appiah becoming visibly angry and reacting in such a manner.

The clarification from Asamoah Gyan provides important context and sheds light on his involvement in the Kevin-Boateng-Muntari incident during the 2014 World Cup. While social media users had criticized Gyan for not standing up for his teammates, Gyan’s statement suggests that the coach’s decision was the decisive factor in their dismissal.
