George Afriyie Seeks Injunction on GFA Presidential Elections

George Afriyie, a presidential aspirant for the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has taken his case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) by filing an application for an injunction on the GFA presidential elections scheduled for October 12, 2023.

Afriyie’s appeal comes in response to the decision made by the GFA Elections Appeals Committee, which upheld his disqualification from participating in the elections. Initially, the GFA Presidential race was expected to be a two-way contest between Afriyie and the incumbent GFA President, Kurt Okraku.

With Afriyie’s disqualification being upheld, Okraku was poised to run unopposed for re-election. However, the situation has now been complicated by Afriyie’s legal actions.

In addition to this development, the Ghana Football Association congress, originally planned for October 5, 2023, was postponed due to a court-ordered adjournment related to a dispute between King Faisal Football Club and the governing body of football in Ghana.

The filing of the injunction by George Afriyie has thrown the GFA presidential elections into uncertainty, leaving stakeholders and observers unsure of the next steps in this process. The Court of Arbitration for Sport will now review Afriyie’s application and make a determination regarding the injunction.

The outcome of this legal action will have significant implications for the future leadership of the Ghana Football Association, as well as for the overall landscape of football in the country. The sports community and football enthusiasts across Ghana will be closely monitoring the developments as they unfold.
