Former First Lady Theresa Kufuor, who recently passed away on October 1, has been praised by the Paramount Chief of the Nandom Traditional Area, Naa Professor Edmund Nminyem Delle, Chiir VIII. He described her as a devoted mother who dedicated her life to both Ghana and God. Naa Prof. Delle acknowledged her significant role in supporting her husband, former President John Agyekum Kufuor, during his successful tenure, highlighting her selfless and dedicated service as First Lady. Known for her humility and compassionate nature, Mrs. Kufuor was regarded as a beloved mother figure to all Ghanaians. Naa Prof. Delle extended his condolences to the Kufuor family and expressed his hopes that she would find eternal peace in the embrace of the Lord Jesus Christ.

 

The Nandom Naa, who is also a former Chairman of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), further emphasized Mrs. Kufuor’s devout faith as a committed member of the Catholic Church. He acknowledged her lifelong service to God and the church, underscoring her unwavering commitment. Naa Prof. Delle, a proud member of the Catholic Church himself, expressed his belief that Mrs. Kufuor is now at rest in the comforting presence of God.

Naa Prof. Delle and a delegation of elders from the Nandom Traditional Area visited former President Kufuor and his family at their residence in Peduase, Eastern Region, to offer their condolences. The Nandom Naa and his entourage also signed the book of condolence, which has been opened in memory of the late Mrs. Kufuor.

 

The Kufuor family announced that, in accordance with Ghanaian custom, they will be sitting in state between 1 pm and 5 pm each day to receive members of the public who wish to express their sympathies. Various dignitaries, including Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and his wife Samira, former Speaker of Parliament Professor Mike Aaron Ocquaye, Chief of Staff Akosua Frema Opare, former Chief of Staff Kwadwo Mpiani, Minister of National Security Kan Dapaah, and Dr. Joyce Aryee, have already visited President Kufuor to convey their condolences.

Mrs. Theresa Kufuor, born on October 25, 1935, was married to Mr. Kufuor for 61 years since their union in 1962. Having pursued her education in the United Kingdom, she worked there as a State Certified Midwife with a Certificate in Premature Nursing after studying at the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford and Paddington General Hospital in London. Before her marriage to the former President, she was known as Theresa Mensah and was the youngest child in her family, with her late brother J. H. Mensah being a prominent figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Mrs. Kufuor began her education at the Catholic Convent in Keta, Volta Region, and later trained as a Registered Nurse at the Southern Hospital Group of Nursing in Edinburgh, Scotland.
