The Director of Legal Affairs of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gary Nimako, has revealed that the late Ernest Kumi, former Member of Parliament for Akwatia, had intended to resign from Parliament just days before his sudden death in July 2025.

Mr. Nimako disclosed this during an interview on Joy News on Tuesday, September 2, noting that Kumi was weary of persistent harassment in his constituency and had confided in him about stepping away from politics.

“Ernest Kumi said that he wants to resign from Parliament. He told me he was tired because of the harassment they were doing to him at the constituency. He said he wanted to resign and go home,” Nimako stated.

The revelation adds a new layer to Kumi’s political and personal struggles. Earlier in January 2025, the Koforidua High Court issued an interim injunction barring him from being sworn in as MP. Despite the order, Kumi went ahead with the swearing-in, which led to a contempt ruling and a warrant for his arrest. However, the Supreme Court overturned the ruling in June 2025, affirming his legitimacy as a legislator.

Sadly, barely a month after that legal victory, Kumi died suddenly, leaving the constituency in shock.

Emphasising the emotional toll Kumi endured, Nimako added, “The gentleman was harassed and over harassed. Six days before he died, he told me he was tired.”

Kumi’s death subsequently led to the Akwatia by-election, which was won by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Bernard Bediako.
