Edward Enninful OBE, the editor-in-chief of British Vogue, has been named the United Kingdom’s most influential black person by the Powerlist 2024, an annual celebration of individuals of African, African Caribbean, and African American heritage. The list, now in its 18th year, aims to highlight black role models and inspire young people.
Enninful, who became the first black man to hold the top position at British Vogue, has been recognized for his significant impact on the fashion industry. Earlier this year, he announced his decision to step down as editor-in-chief, focusing on expanding the brand globally and pursuing other projects. He also serves as the European editorial director of Condé Nast.
Expressing his gratitude, the 51-year-old Enninful described it as an honor to be ranked number one on the Powerlist, which highlights individuals who break boundaries and champion diversity in their respective industries.
Born in Ghana, Enninful moved to London at a young age with his parents and siblings. He was discovered as a teenager while traveling on a train and briefly pursued a career in modeling. At the age of 18, he began his editorial journey as the fashion director of i-D, a British youth culture magazine, becoming the youngest person to hold an editor position at a major international fashion publication.
The Powerlist 2024 recognizes influential figures across various sectors, including business, science, technology, and the arts. Among the notable names on this year’s list are Afua Kyei, chief financial officer at the Bank of England, and Steven Bartlett, Dragon’s Den star and podcaster.
Other individuals who made the top spots include Lord Woolley of Woodford, co-founder of Operation Black Vote and principal at Cambridge University’s Homerton College, as well as model and activist Munroe Bergdorf. Comedian Mo Gilligan and entrepreneur Patricia Bright also received recognition.
Past recipients of the number one ranking on the Powerlist include Jacky Wright, former chief digital officer and corporate vice-president at Microsoft US, seven-time Formula One champion Sir Lewis Hamilton, and former Children’s Laureate Malorie Blackman.
The Powerlist 2024 showcases a diverse range of accomplished individuals, celebrating their achievements and impact within their respective fields.
