EC Keeps Presidential Filing Fee at GH¢100k, Parliamentary at GH¢10k for 2024 Polls

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that the filing fees for the upcoming 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections will remain the same as in 2020. This means that presidential candidates will be required to pay GH¢100,000, while parliamentary candidates will pay GH¢10,000.

The decision to maintain the fees follows a joint communiqué issued by the EC and various political parties after the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on Thursday, March 7, 2024. The meeting saw leaders of political parties providing input into the 2024 Election Plan, with the EC expressing its readiness to implement several suggestions from the parties.

During the 2020 elections, the EC faced criticism for doubling the filing fee for presidential candidates from GH¢50,000 to GH¢100,000. However, Dr. Bossman Eric Asare, a Deputy Chairman of the Electoral Commission, defended the increase, stating that it was in line with the value of the currency.

In addition to the filing fees, the EC also announced that it would maintain the use of indelible ink for voter marking during the elections. The Limited Voter Registration Exercise will take place for 21 days, starting from Tuesday, May 7 to Monday, May 27, 2024. The exercise will be conducted at the District Offices of the Electoral Commission and in difficult-to-access Electoral Areas.

The Electoral Commission’s decision to keep the filing fees unchanged for the 2024 elections has been met with mixed reactions, with some commending the move while others question the rationale behind it.
