The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially revoked the membership of Mohammed Umar Sanda after he declared his intention to contest the upcoming Ayawaso East by-election as an independent candidate. The by-election is scheduled for March 3, 2026.

In a letter dated February 17, 2026, and signed by NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the party stated that Umar Sanda’s decision directly violates its constitution and disregards the collective decision to field a democratically selected candidate.

“By virtue of your decision to break ranks with the Party and contest against the officially endorsed candidate of the NDC, you have automatically forfeited your membership of the Party with immediate effect,” the letter said.

The NDC further warned Umar Sanda that he is prohibited from using the party’s name, logo, colours, symbols, or any intellectual property in the course of his campaign or related political activities.

The development sets the stage for a heated contest in Ayawaso East, as the party’s officially endorsed candidate, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, prepares to face an independent bid from a former party member.
