Ghana and Algeria have signed a landmark visa waiver agreement aimed at strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations. The agreement was finalized during an official visit to Algiers by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
The signing of the agreement follows high-level discussions with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf. It marks a significant step towards enhancing bilateral relations by facilitating ease of travel for citizens of both countries.
As part of the broader strategic cooperation agenda, the two countries pledged to expand collaboration in key sectors. These include the provision of additional scholarships for Ghanaian students to pursue studies in artificial intelligence, robotics, and engineering in Algeria.
In a joint communiqué, both governments also revealed plans to establish a direct air link between Accra and Algiers to ease travel and stimulate tourism and business exchanges. Furthermore, they agreed to deepen cooperation in oil and gas, with a view to launching a strategic energy partnership in the near future.
Security and intelligence sharing featured prominently in the discussions, with both nations committing to stronger collaboration in combating transnational threats and fostering regional stability.
The two sides also agreed to revive the Ghana-Algeria Joint Economic Cooperation framework, which will serve as a platform for advancing trade, investment, and industrial initiatives between the two nations.
Minister Ablakwa described the visit as a reaffirmation of the longstanding solidarity between Ghana and Algeria, dating back to the early post-independence era. He emphasized the importance of the partnership in promoting mutual growth and regional integration.
The agreement is expected to open up new opportunities for citizens and businesses, while reinforcing the historical bonds between the two African nations.
